Our speaker for this even is Hugh Mercer QC, Avocat (Belgium), Essex Court Chambers, Barrister (England and Wales) and Avocat (Barreau du Brabant Wallon)
Hugh practises from Essex Court Chambers in London and Solutio Avocats in Brussels/LLN as well as the cross-border network Alphalex Avocats. He was called to the Bar in 1985, took silk in 2008, is a Bencher of Middle Temple and a Deputy High Court Judge sitting in the Queen’s Bench Division and Administrative Court.
He specialises in litigation involving issues of public international or private international law, EU law/retained EU law, foreign law and public/administrative law before courts and arbitral tribunals in the UK, the CJEU and other EU Member States. For example, he is currently involved in jurisdiction/enforcement issues including anti-suit injunctions; challenges to regulatory decisions; follow-on competition law damages claims; interpretation and application of the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement and the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
Chair of Future Relationship (formerly Brexit) Working Group of the Bar of England and Wales; former Leader of the European Circuit, a network of advocates in the EU providing advice and representation in cross-border cases (www.europeancircuit.com). Head of UK Delegation to the CCBE (2007-2010 and 2021- ) and former Chair of the CCBE EU Lawyers Committee (2015-2020) and of the CCBE Permanent Delegation to the Court of Justice of the CJEU (2010-2015). Co-Author, European Civil Practice, an article by article commentary on the Brussels Regulation on Jurisdiction and Judgments.
He also sits as an arbitrator and is on the reserve list of UK arbitrators under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement.He provides advocacy in both English and French and has a good working knowledge of German, Spanish & Italian.
