Joint BILA -ALWL Social Event: private tour of Dr Johnson's House

  • BILA Fourth Floor, 22-24 Ely Place, London EC1N 6TE United Kingdom (map)

You are cordially invited to a joint BILA-ALWL social event, a private guided tour of Dr Johnson's House, at 17 Gough Square London, EC4A 3DE on Thursday 12 September at 6.30pm.

Dr Johnson's House was the home of Samuel Johnson when he compiled his seminal Dictionary of the English Language in 1755. This publication was of crucial importance in the development of the English language and the House is an open window into the Age of Enlightenment.

The four-storey building has retained many of its period features and visitors can enter all the rooms in the house and sit down on the chairs and window seats to soak up the atmosphere.

The private tour will last up to two hours and will finish by 8.30pm.

The amount per person will be £15. The Flyer and Registration Form can be downloaded here.

 Please Note:

We must confirm final numbers to Dr Johnson's House by Wednesday 4 September 2024 after which date there can be NO refunds.

Places are limited, so please reply soon to register your interest and check availability by contacting BILA's Honorary Secretary, Victoria Rowlands, at secretary@bila.biz.

After the tour we will be heading to the nearby the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub (at 145 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2BP) for food and drinks. Please let us know by Wednesday 4 September 2024 if you would like to join us for the post-tour meal so that we can reserve a table.
